Strong Families, Strong Communities: Survival Skills for Parents and Kids

One of the most inspiring parts of Alfonso Solis’ work is his focus on families. Through free survival workshops, he teaches parents and children practical outdoor and emergency skills such as first aid, shelter-building, fire-starting, water purification, and tracking. But these classes are about more than survival—they are about connection. Solis believes that when families learn together, communicate better, and spend time away from screens, they become stronger, and stronger families help build safer, healthier communities. It’s a simple idea with lasting impact: confidence, teamwork, and resilience can all be taught.

Several shootings have occurred inside religious institutions in Texas. A Hispanic man from Dallas took the initiative to conduct training sessions at churches attended by the Hispanic community, so that congregants would know how to react in the event of an "active shooter" situation. The story was broadcast on Telemundo 39 in April 2022.
